We've highlighted some of the coziest cafes in the New York metro area where families can find the best hot cocoa or tea. Because after a long day of winter activities, who wouldn't love something warm to sip on? Whether you've just finished ice-skating or are simply in the mood for something sweet, you'll find a cafe near you that serves up the best hot chocolate and tea in the area.

Alice’s Tea Cup

Whimsical Alice in Wonderland themed teahouse carries more than 100 varieties of tea. Options for Afternoon Tea include the Nibble (choice of unlimited tea, scone, sandwich, and cookies for $36); Mad Hatter (choice of tea, scones, two sandwiches, and a dessert for $72); and, for those throwing caution to the wind, the Jabberwocky (choice of tea, scones, unlimited sandwiches, and two desserts for $66 per person). In addition, Alice's serves a traditional hot chocolate, and a Loco Cocoa, with cayenne, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

The hot chocolate, which is made with 100-percent chocolate, is a light and frothy beverage that comes in several different flavors and chocolate varieties. Classic chocolate beverages such as Italian Thick Hot Chocolate with vanilla cream and Mexican Spicy Hot Chocolate with red chili, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pepper are also on the menu.

The Serendipitous Hot Chocolate is topped with whipped cream, grated orange, cinnamon, and shaved French chocolate. Other options include the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, Peanut Butter Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, and Frrrozen Mint Hot Chocolate. Tea-lovers can indulge in one of seven varieties. Serendipity also serves a full lunch and dinner menu.

Afternoon Tea service includes your choice of tea, finger sandwiches, two scones with clotted cream and jam, and cake ($40, $75 for two). In addition, Tea & Sympathy stresses a no-frills environment, with a very kid-friendly menu and atmosphere. Tea is also sold by the pot, and comes in nearly 30 varieties.

Serves breakfast, lunch, and a full espresso bar in a kid- and stroller-friendly environment. Its rich hot chocolate is made with Guittard chocolate sauces. The café carries full-bodied Mighty Leaf teas in 10 varieties and offers an organic chai tea latte. Its specialty is the Dirty Hippie, a chai latte with espresso.

Chat Noir Teahouse

Offers a country, French-style atmosphere perfect for brunch or afternoon tea. The teahouse carries nearly 50 different teas, including black, green, herbal, fruit, and oolong. Tea Service includes finger sandwiches, scones, and a pot of tea. Tea is also served alone by the pot. French-inspired pastries are a staple here and specialties include fruit tarts, macaroons, sweet pies, and freshly baked croissants and brioche. Reservations can be made for tea parties for children or any other occasion.

The Cup Coffeehouse

A Brooklyn-style coffee shop straight out of the 1970s, serves up a variety of hot beverages, such as mocha cocoa, hot chocolates, gingerbread lattes, and specialty teas. If you want it cold, try the frozen hot chocolate or coffee frappe. Also serves pies, desserts, ice cream, and classic diner snacks such as spicy fries, nachos, and flatbread sandwiches.

Georgio's Coffee Roasters

Sells coffee and teas from all over the world. Currently offering more than 10 varieties of coffee and teas, including the exotic Cascara cherry tea. Georgio's products are eco-friendly and fair trade-certified.

Robinson's Tea Room

A full-service restaurant that serves both tea and lunch items such as wraps, salads, soups, and quiches. Tea service includes unlimited tea, iced tea, or coffee; scones; assorted finger sandwiches; and assorted desserts. There are nearly 50 varieties of tea available, ranging from traditional English breakfast, jasmine, and apricot to more exotic flavors such as chocolate macadamia nut and butterscotch caramel toffee.

Urban Coffee

This family-owned shop’s hot chocolate can be made with white, dark, or milk chocolate syrup and whatever milk you like. Add a flavor shot, such as raspberry, mocha, or peppermint to make it a special treat (more than 20 flavors to choose from). If you prefer vanilla to chocolate, try the Vanilla Crème, served hot for the colder seasons. The café carries approximately 25 varieties of tea—the most popular is its home-brewed chai, made with all-natural ingredients. If you're looking for a pick-me-up, try the Teaspresso—a strong black tea brewed through an espresso machine. A variety of baked goods, including gluten-free and vegan selections, are available.

Coffee Labs Roasters

Widely known for its selection of sustainable coffees and pet-friendly atmosphere, this shop offers a bold hot chocolate featuring small-batch artisan chocolate from the Mast Brothers. The shop continues to serve hot chocolate and sipping chocolate, frozen blended drinks, and a variety of teas. Coffee Labs also serves up locally baked pastries. All coffee is available for pickup.

The Kneaded Bread

The cocoa is made from scratch by melting down a bar of semisweet chocolate and frothing it to order, the result is a thick brew with a hint of cinnamon and cream.

Paleteria Fernandez

Offering a more exotic blend, Paleteria Fernandez serves up a delicious, homemade champurrado, Mexican hot chocolate thickened with masa harina (finely ground corn powder). The result is a filling, rich blend, the perfect compliment to the restaurant’s other dishes such as tamales or duros de harina, dehydrated fried chips.  

Peekskill Coffee House
