Brooklyn Kids Can Now Join Free Girls Who Code Club

Girls will learn coding basics while developing teamwork skills that will be help them become future leaders.

A Girls Who Code Club has launched in Bedford-Stuyvesant for girls in grades 3-5 who would like to learn more about computer languages while working on leadership skills. Girls Who Code is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does.

As a central part of the Club experience, girls work with one another on an Impact Project, where they use computer science to solve a problem relevant to their Club and community. Through this project, girls learn teamwork and leadership, while also learning the fundamental computer science concepts that form the basis for all computer programming languages: loops, variables, conditionals and functions.

Girls Who Code operates in locations throughout Brooklyn and across the country. Clubs are located in Flatbush, Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Ridgewood, to name a few Brooklyn locations. The organization is building the largest pipeline of future engineers in the United States, according to its website. Beyond clubs, the organization also offers two-week summer courses, college loops, and a summer immersion program. To learn more about various programs and find the location nearest you, visit the Girls Who Code site.
