Academy of Holy Angels Student is Ranked First Among NJ Ski Racers

Congratulations, Sydney Loverich!

For the third consecutive year, Mahwah resident Sydney Loverich has been ranked as New Jersey’s No. 1 ski racer in the United States Ski and Snowboard Association/New Jersey Ski Racing Association’s U19 division.

Loverich was invited to compete at the Eastern Region Finals at Gore Mountain, and received a medal for her top ten finish in the giant slalom. Each year, competitors in this event include the best skiers from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

This top-ranked racer first put on a pair of skis when she was just five years old. She started racing at the age of nine, and soon began participating in state-level competitions in Vermont.

Three years ago, Loverich moved from Vermont to New Jersey, and became affiliated with the New Jersey Ski Racing Association, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association’s official amateur alpine competition organization. She has been racing out of Mount Peter in Warwick, New York.

She also enrolled in the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, New Jersey, where she is now completing her senior year. During her sophomore year at AHA, she was named to the 2017 New Jersey State Team by the NJSRA, Alpine Division, and competed in the USSA U16 Eastern Championship and the Canadian/American Competition.

Loverich, who describes skiing as her true passion, would like to continue her athletic career as a college student. “I have not decided where I am going to college yet, but I am planning on racing on a club team wherever I go,” she explained, adding that she will be pursuing a career in anesthesiology.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women, like Loverich, have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics.
